The Alta Via 1 is the most celebrated long-distance trekking route in the Dolomites, crossing high passes and linking legendary rifugi. This two-day segment takes you through the heart of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, a landscape of pale limestone towers, silent plateaus, and wildflower meadows that feel entirely removed from the modern world.
Day 1 (~18 km, +1,050 m / -620 m): We depart from the iconic emerald lake of Braies and climb steadily through the Senes plateau, passing Malga Senes and reaching Rifugio Senes (2,116 m) for a mid-afternoon rest. After a short descent and re-climb, we overnight at Rifugio Fanes (2,060 m), one of the most atmospheric huts in the entire Dolomites. Dinner and breakfast included.
Day 2 (~16 km, +980 m / -1,200 m): An early alpine start across the Fanes plate you may spot marmots, chamois, even roe deer. The route climbs to Passo Limo (2,172 m), then winds through lunar terrain toward the final ascent to Rifugio Lagazuoi (2,752 m), accessible also by cable car for descent. Sunset from the terrace is unforgettable.
Experience with multi-day mountain walking required. No via ferrata or technical terrain.
