Rising directly above Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Tofane are among the most iconic summits in the Dolomites. This demanding three-day circuit links all three main peaks: Tofana di Rozes, Tofana di Mezzo, and Tofana di Dentro, through a sequence of classic via ferrate, high-mountain refuges, and exposed ridgelines. It's a true alpine adventure for experienced hikers comfortable with sustained exposure, fixed cables, and long days at altitude.
Day 1: Into the Heart of the Tofane
The route begins at the trailhead parking for path no. 414. After the initial approach, you tackle the Via Ferrata Lipella, one of the longest and most storied ferrate in the Dolomites, threading through tunnels carved during the First World War before opening onto the upper slopes of Tofana di Rozes (3,225 m). From the summit, the day closes with a descent to the Rifugio Giussani, set in the saddle between Rozes and the higher peaks, your base for the night.
Day 2: The Great Traverse to Tofana di Mezzo
A full day on the rock. From Giussani you traverse toward Rifugio Pomedes, then climb the Ferrata Giuseppe Olivieri to Punta Anna, continuing along the spectacular Ferrata Gianni Aglio with its airy, sustained exposure. The line leads to the highest of the three summits, Tofana di Mezzo (3,244 m), the rooftop of the group. The night is spent high up at the Rifugio Cima Tofana, beside the cable-car station.
Day 3: The Final Summit and Return
The last day reaches Tofana di Dentro (3,238 m), completing the trilogy of peaks. You then descend via the Ferrata Formenton before picking up path no. 407 for the long return to the valley and the starting trailhead, closing the loop.
